Passengers is a romantic drama starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. The film also stars Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne and Andy Garcia. The film originally called for Keanu Reeves and Emily Blunt to be the lead characters. The film was released by Columbia Pictures and directed by Morten Tyldum. The script for Passengers was written by John Spaihts. The film earned a rating of PG-13 and has a runtime of 116 minutes.
They are two passengers on the starship Avalon, on its 120-year voyage to a planet and are transporting 5,259 people. The ship has a malfunction in two of its hibernation chambers causing them to open prematurely and the two characters are force to be stranded on the spaceship, still 90 years from the planet. The two even risk going into space, despite not knowing what is happening around them.
Aurora Dunn (Jennifer Lawrence) was a journalist from New York who gave up her life on Earth to learn more about cosmic travel. Her co-passenger Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) is an engineer who wanted to leave Earth and bought the ticket for the journey. Two fight to live and find a way out, but slowly end up falling in love.
Throughout their predicament, they soon discover the whole ship is failing. It’s discovered that going back to sleep is not an option and instead are faced to spend the rest of their life on the ship, with only each other for company. Pratt’s character appears to have a secret, making the viewer question his real motives for wanting to be on the trip. Throughout the film they begin to piece together the truth behind why they woke up.
Film critics are expecting this to pick up an Academy Award as well as making a lot of money for the studio. Passengers will be available to stream on Netflix in 2017.
